Functional Capacity Assessments

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is an assessment that helps show how your disability affects your everyday life. It looks at what you can do on your own, where you might need support, and what could help you reach your goals.

This assessment is usually completed by an occupational therapist, and it’s often used to support NDIS access, plan reviews, or when your needs or circumstances change.

What does it involve?

During the assessment, the therapist will talk with you (and your supports if needed) about how you manage daily tasks, such as:

  • Getting around your home or community

  • Taking care of yourself (e.g., showering, dressing, toileting)

  • Communicating and socialising with others

  • Preparing meals, doing housework, or managing money

  • Taking part in work, study, volunteering or hobbies

The therapist will also look at any supports you already have, what’s working well, and what extra help you might need.

Why might I need one?

A Functional Capacity Assessment can:

  • Help the NDIS understand your support needs

  • Provide evidence to request more or different funding

  • Recommend things like assistive technology, home modifications, or a support worker

  • Show how extra support could help you build your independence and reach your goals

  • Identify any risks if you don’t have enough support in place

When is it helpful?

You might need an FCA if:

  • You’re applying for the NDIS for the first time

  • You’re having a plan reassessment

  • Your needs have changed

  • You want to request extra support or services
